In Guangzhou, an abandoned masonry building on the grounds of a former sugar factory was reimagined as a restaurant conceived together with a working farm. Built originally with Russian capital, the building is known for its yellow brick walls, standing bright against tropical greenery under Guangzhou's warm climate — not unlike Okinawa's. Walk through the town and you find people settling into whatever shade feels good that day. The client, who runs an organic farm nearby, serves Japanese cuisine here made from vegetables grown with their own hands.
People find their own comfortable shade to sit in as they move through town.
We wondered whether that same comfort could be made in front of the building.
Grapevines, chosen by the client, will climb the columns and reach into the pergola.
Between the trees out front and the woven bamboo above, dappled light and a breeze pass through.
We wondered whether the shade cast by the two existing trees in front of the building could be amplified, made to feel like the shade of a forest. A pergola of bent, woven bamboo is designed as a device that loosely gathers together natural light, wind, plants, people, furniture, and lighting. The weaving technique itself borrows from the craft of local chair makers.
On the terrace, vines — grapes among them, selected by the client — will be planted to climb the columns and weave into the pergola above. In time, light will fall in patterns through the trees and the bent bamboo together, and a breeze will move freely between them. Where yellow brick meets bamboo, two different materials quietly connect this place to the people who come to it.
