This tenant office building stands on a trapezoidal site beside the tracks in front of JR Suidobashi Station, where the Chuo–Sobu Line carries hundreds of thousands of passengers each day. The project began in the middle of the pandemic. Telework was spreading rapidly, and the value of working somewhere well-ventilated and pleasant was being reconsidered — even as,
a quieter loneliness — the absence of casual chat, of asking a colleague something in passing —
meant that the meaning of gathering to work was also, quietly, beginning to be recognized again.
What passengers see from the train window is the scene of people at work itself.
Their everyday activity becomes, just as it is, a facade opened to the city.
A rectilinear workspace fills the site to its edges, and in front of it, each floor carries a triangular "work terrace." The terrace is framed by a slender 300mm-square RC skeleton, with voids opened here and there to secure openness that doesn't count toward floor area while loosely connecting the floors above and below. Stairs, furniture, and planting are inserted using the frame as a guide, giving each floor's work terrace its own distinct character. Working outdoors, laptop in hand; a spot for a meeting or a break — the terrace becomes a device that draws a variety of behaviors into what would otherwise be a uniform workspace.
The exterior is cast-in-place concrete that makes use of the formwork's pattern, its expression of light and shadow shifting with the hours. A restaurant on the lower floor connects the building to the liveliness of the street. The aim was a model for the office of the future — one that holds together the efficiency a tenant office demands with a place that is open and genuinely pleasant to work in.
