The town of Misato, with a population of around 4,000, shares a friendship agreement with the village of Mas in Bali — a bond born thirty years ago when the town commissioned a hand-carved canoe, the jukung, from Balinese craftspeople. To bring the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana — the harmony of people, nature, and the divine — into built form, we conducted fieldwork on traditional Balinese architecture and materials, interpreting a distant culture through the lens of the local landscape. The sweeping roof echoes the curve of the river and surrounding hills; the timber trusses recall the hull of a boat. A venue for canoe competition at the 2030 Shimane National Sports Festival, this building quietly holds two worlds within one place — a community landmark where local life and a faraway culture meet.

When the wind stills, the reflection appears on the water — the silhouette of a jukung, rising to the surface.

Knee braces evoking the stroke of a canoe paddle mark a gentle rhythm.
Boat and boathouse dissolve quietly into one another, as if they were always a single landscape.
The Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana holds that harmony between people, nature, and the divine is the foundation of a good life. Resonating with this belief, we layered onto it the Japanese aesthetic of furubiru — the idea that beauty deepens with time. The structure is built from locally-sourced Shimane cedar; the roof is clad in acetylated Accoya timber, and timber is used throughout the exterior joinery. As the years pass, the roof will shift to silver-grey, the walls will settle into quieter tones, and the building will gradually merge with the surrounding landscape. In rain, the roof absorbs moisture and transforms — like a living thing, changing its expression with the seasons and the hours.
The boathouse holds two characters at once: the everyday (ke) and the festive (hare). The training room that supports daily practice is built to a rational module — members kept to four metres or less, bays set at 3.64 metres deep. Rather than fighting that shallow depth, a full-wall mirror draws the surrounding landscape into the space, creating a training environment unlike any other, seamlessly connected to the outside. The festive character is embodied in a split gate (candi bentar) made in Bali as a ward against evil spirits, murals by Balinese artists, and an outdoor stage for Iwami Kagura performances and Balinese traditional dance — offerings to the gods of the surrounding mountains.
In less than a year since completion, the boathouse has grown far beyond its role as a canoe venue, hosting a regional industry fair, a Bali cultural festival, and last summer's national high school athletics championships. Transcending the bounds of a sports facility, it has already begun generating new value as a resource for local tourism and a hub for cultural exchange.
