A plan to rebuild a fifty-year-old kindergarten surrounded by housing blocks. In place of an old building cut off from its neighborhood by bus commuting, the new kindergarten was redesigned as a hill facing the green space at the estate's center — its slope scattered with places to play, watched over by the community around it.
A net-climbing hill, a grass slide, a terrace of its own.
In play, children learn — without being taught — to look out for one another.
The Forest Hall makes the estate and the kindergarten one continuous ground.
A view of childhood, watched over by the whole community.
The site sits surrounded by rows of housing blocks, with green space continuing only to the west. Unlike fifty years ago, when the estate was built, most children now commute by bus from outside it — leaving the kindergarten feeling strangely disconnected from its own neighborhood. The old building, expanded piecemeal over the decades, suffered from awkward circulation and classrooms darkened by the shadow of the surrounding blocks.
So we redesigned the building itself as a hill facing the green space that runs through the center of the estate. For children who love to run and climb, a mono-pitched roof rises toward that green space, its slope scattered with a net-climbing hill, a grass slide, a terrace, a wall to burrow through, and columns to climb. Without being taught to, children form a queue at the slide, and older kids take the hands of younger ones on the terrace — play becoming, quietly, a lesson in getting along.
A Forest Hall — carved into the hill as a threshold between inside and out — sits at the center of the building, lined up with the classrooms to face the green space, so that even within the housing estate, the building feels as though it stands in a forest. The Hall is positioned to be visible from the street outside the entrance, so residents watching from their balconies can see children playing on the hill. The kindergarten opened amid the pandemic, but children playing freely outdoors became a new, reassuring sight for a whole community watching over them.
