This community exchange facility stands along the approach to Ikisu Shrine — one of the three great shrines of the Togoku Sanja — facing the Oshioi spring that rises at the edge of an ancient boat basin. The site was once home to the Kashiwaya Inn, a celebrated Edo-period teahouse where literary figures came to stay. The facility inherits that layered history, conceived as a node connecting the shrine approach with the waterfront, and the past with the present. The generous second-floor cantilever is achieved through a reciprocal timber structure inspired by segai-zukuri. Stone-paved flooring drawn in from the approach creates an inner pathway; entrances on three sides welcome visitors from every direction. Closed to the street yet open to the community.
Inspired by segai-zukuri, a traditional timber cantilever technique seen in the nationally designated Important Cultural Property Yamamoto Residence within the city, a reciprocal structure — combining short lengths of standard-cut Ibaraki timber in four stacked, grid-like layers — achieves a generous overhang without large-section members.
This community exchange facility stands along the approach to Ikisu Shrine — one of the three great shrines of the Togoku Sanja — facing the Oshioi spring, a sacred well that rises at the edge of a boat basin fed from the Hitachi-Tone River. Before the facility was built, the approach offered no places to stop, and visitors would simply turn home after paying their respects. The project was conceived to provide a place where pilgrims could linger, while also serving as an information hub for Kamisu City.
Surrounded by a residential neighborhood, the site made a large opening toward the shrine approach difficult, out of consideration for the privacy of nearby residents. Turning that constraint to advantage, the reciprocal structure supporting the second floor runs continuously between interior and exterior, drawing the approach's stone-paved finish into the podium and interior to form an inner approach that threads through the building. Entrances are set on three sides, allowing both worshippers and local residents to enter from any direction — securing an openness that invites people to stop by naturally, in a composition that is closed to the street yet open to the community.
The exterior draws from the colors and materials of Ikisu Shrine — earthy browns, vermilion, the grey of the torii, copper roofing, and stone-paved finishes. Prioritizing quiet integration over bold landmark status, the building gently connects history, landscape, and the lives of those who pass through it.
