A rental apartment building in the heart of the city. Protecting privacy, in architecture, tends to mean closing off — building a wall. But what residents actually need may not be a wall at all: a boundary that separates while still, gently, connecting. That question is where this project began.
Neither transparent nor opaque — a boundary like a shoji screen.
Fins turned to five angles, changing expression with every glance.
A transparency that appears and disappears, depending on how you look.
Dappled light from the fins meets dappled light from trees grown tall.
What came to mind were devices Japanese architecture has cultivated for centuries — shoji screens, latticed windows. Neither transparent nor opaque, they act as membranes that let only light, air, and presence pass softly through. As a contemporary translation of that idea, we wrapped the building in a railing made of vertical fins, each set at one of five different angles of rotation.
The railing keeps changing expression — with the angle you view it from, the distance, the strength of the light. To someone walking below, it becomes a wall that seems to breathe, its transparency shifting with every step. From inside, light slipping between the fins mixes with light reflected off them, carrying the view outside in, diffused like fine particles.
What results is not a material transparency, like glass. It is a transparency that appears and disappears depending on the viewer's angle and conditions — a phenomenal transparency, you might call it. Physically closed, yet perceptually open: the building's boundary is formed in that in-between.
At the foot of the building, in the green strip created by the setback, we planted trees. Over ten years, twenty years, they will grow — branches reaching out, leaves thickening, eventually casting their own dappled light on the ground. That light will mingle with the dappled light of the fins above, softening the boundary between inside and out a little further, year after year.
