At a roadside station on the highland with a view of the three peaks of Hiruzen, a soba restaurant long loved by the local community was lost to fire. Rebuilding it became not simply a matter of restoring the building, but an attempt to carry forward the time this land had nurtured.
A deep eave, its steel beams and rafters carefully detailed, echoes the ridgeline of Hiruzen,
quietly shedding the weight of snow while guiding the gaze of those standing beneath it toward the mountains.
The noren curtain at the entrance is plant-dyed using chips of hinoki cypress.
Passed through local craftspeople's hands, the building itself becomes an accumulation of the region's materials and skill.
In a region where snow can accumulate to a depth of 1,400mm, the traditional hip-and-gable roof form of the area was rebuilt for the present day as a hybrid structure — conventional post-and-beam framing combined with CLT, a product of the local timber industry. Inside, a ceiling that combines exposed CLT with fire-retardant timber carries the texture and warmth unique to local wood directly into the space, and from the dining seats where guests eat their soba, the mountain ridgeline is framed like a picture.
The roof, the eave, the noren — every element here is worked backward from this region's climate and way of life. The dining floor combines tile and flooring, letting the texture of the earthen doma continue into a space where people can also settle in and stay awhile. In summer, guests eat soba while looking out at the cool breeze off the Hiruzen highlands beneath the deep eave; in winter, at a landscape buried in snow. Revived after being lost to fire, this place continues to welcome people through every season, as a new vessel carrying forward the memory of the community.
