A relocation and new-construction project for a nursery and kindergarten approaching fifty years old. With a total floor area exceeding 1,000㎡, the building falls under "large-scale timber construction" and must meet corresponding fire-resistance requirements — met here through a char-layer design that leaves part of the timber structure exposed, creating a space where the warmth of wood can be felt.
The building itself is conceived as a forest — this is the "Forest Kindergarten."
The childcare rooms are arranged in a ring around the perimeter of the building, encircling a large central space called the "Mannaka Hall." Standing around the hall are thirteen "Tree Trusses," their generous cross-sections made possible by the char-layer design. Structures that evoke trees, they carry the column-free roof above and create a forest-like scene at the heart of the kindergarten.
The childcare rooms are staggered slightly against one another, and the interior and exterior margins created by that offset are put to use as places for the children to play and learn. Outdoors, there are terraces, an earthen mound, a slide, and a water-play area; indoors, threaded between the Tree Trusses, are log tunnels, a treehouse, forest shortcuts, a ball pool, and a toddlers' plaza. As though freely exploring a forest, the children move about following their curiosity, and an environment where they can naturally develop sociability and physicality through play is woven into the building as a whole.
In recent years, the number of midsummer days exceeding 30°C has roughly doubled compared to two decades ago, and the way extreme heat restricts outdoor play — even on clear days — has become a serious challenge in early childhood education. This project responds to that challenge by extending the "forest" into both the outdoors and the indoors. A place where, regardless of the weather, on rainy days and sunny days alike, children can play, learn, and grow as though wandering through a forest.
