A six-minute walk from the west exit of Takasaki Station, in a town still lined with twenty-four shopping streets. Yet parking lots have spread through it like moth-eaten fabric, and the bustle that once filled the streets — the small, unplanned moments of stopping to talk — has been quietly disappearing.
In a town eaten away by parking lots,
we asked what a plaza could mean at the scale of a Japanese street.
A "street doma" carved from the ground floor.
Neighbors drift through, beneath a single pergola roof.
We turned to Camillo Sitte, the nineteenth-century Austrian urban planner, and the five conditions he set out for a good plaza in his book City Planning According to Artistic Principles. The grand plazas of European cities cannot simply be transplanted onto a Japanese street. So we translated Sitte's principles to the scale of this town, wrapping building and open space together — horizontally and vertically — to make a small, three-dimensional plaza of our own.
This two-generation house with an attached shop puts that idea into a single building. The ground floor holds a café and photography studio run by the owner; above, the owner and their parents live. To the north, an apartment building with ground-floor shops is planned, its plaza facing the site from one side while the road runs along the other. So we cut away part of the ground floor and slipped an open café into the gap. A single pergola roof spans inside and out, linking the road to the south with the plaza to the north under one continuous eave. The widened passage becomes part of the plaza itself — a place for neighbors to wander through, or stop and talk — what we thought of as a "street doma," the earthen threshold of a traditional house, opened outward to the whole neighborhood.
Upstairs, the living quarters keep small windows on the east, west, and north sides, where they face the apartment building and neighboring houses, and open widely only to the south, where the view is clear. Privacy is preserved, and daylight still reaches deep into the rooms — a home that is bright and open without giving up its quiet.
We hope this place, where a single roof ties street to plaza, becomes a small gathering point open to the town — resting gently not only in the lives of those who live here, but in the daily paths of everyone who passes by.
