埼玉県朝霞市の造成地の中腹に建つ住宅。敷地は前面道路から2mほどの高さにあり、隣地は原っぱとなっている。この特徴を生かし、隣地を借景として、敷地外にまで空間が広がるような住宅ができないかと考えた。落ち着いた2層の小屋と、暮らしを家の外まで拡張していく外とも内ともつかないような開放的な空間、さらに北側には隣地の擁壁に囲まれ、将来的には室内化できる半屋外のテラスを設えている。３つの異なる空間によって、空地の緑や空、周辺の家や景色と近いけど守られているような絶妙な距離感を作っている。道路と高低差があることで、道を歩く人と程よく距離が保たれ、原っぱの景色をめいっぱいに取り込んでいる。家族単位で暮らすことが多い郊外住宅地に、独身男性が1人暮らしをするという少し異なる住まい方だが、家の一部を周囲に開け放ったことで、空地を挟んだ向かいのご夫婦が畑で採れた野菜をお裾分けしてくれたり、裏手の家のおじさんが庭の柿を持ってきてくれたり、庭いじり中に道を歩くおばあちゃんが話しかけてきたりと、ご近所さんたちと心地よい関係性が生まれている。住み手の包容力のある性格と、住人の顔が見える建築の作られ方が、上手く合わさったことで幸せな建築となった。

House in Asaka
A house built on the hillside of a land development in Asaka City, Saitama Prefecture. The site is 2m high from the front road and adjacent to open grass space. Taking advantage of this feature, we tried to achieve the house as if it expands the interior space toward outside the site, with the adjacent land as a backdrop. The house is consisted of three components; a cozy two-story hut, an open space like corridor that takes lifestyle to the outside of the house, and semi-open terrace surrounded by the retaining walls which can be transformed to the interior in the future. Three different spaces keep well balanced distances that are neither too close nor too far to the greenery and sky of the open space, and the surrounding houses. Due to the height difference from the road, it is open but keeps a reasonable distance from the people passing by, and fully captures the scenery of the fields. By opening up a part of the house, the couple across the open space will share the vegetables harvested in their field, the neighbors of the back house brings the fruits in the garden. It contributes to establish pleasant relationships with the neighbors. Well balanced combination of client’s open-minded personality and transparency of architecture which reveals who live in there, leads a small happy architecture.
